Overview
The Banner University Medical Center–Phoenix (BUMC-P) MIGS Fellowship Program offers a comprehensive two-year academic training experience distinguished by outstanding research, scholarly, and surgical education. We are dedicated to preparing each graduating fellow to excel as a confident, independent academic surgeon upon completion of the program.
Our dedicated faculty includes fellowship-trained academic clinicians with specialized focus in chronic pelvic pain and endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding and fibroid management, as well as abnormal placentation and uterine isthmocele, providing fellows with mentorship grounded in the latest evidencebased approaches. Surgical training includes experience with advanced operative hysteroscopy, vaginal surgery, conventional laparoscopy, and robotic surgery. Training is further enriched by access to the Simulation Center for continual skills refinement. With exposure to a high volume and diverse spectrum of gynecologic pathology, we equip our fellows with the breadth and depth of clinical expertise necessary for independent academic practice. The program also emphasizes an intentional progression of autonomy, ensuring that fellows graduate fully confident in their surgical and clinical decision-making abilities to practice independently as minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons.
A hallmark of our program is our multi-disciplinary approach to the management of complex gynecologic conditions. Fellows work closely alongside specialists in radiology, colorectal surgery, general surgery, and other disciplines, fostering an integrated and collaborative model of patient care.
Fellows train primarily at the downtown campus of Banner University Medical Center–Phoenix, a Level I Trauma Center and Level IV Perinatal Hospital with over 730 beds and 32 operating rooms. Fellows play an active role as educators, teaching OB/GYN residents (9 per year) and medical students through didactics, bedside instruction, and surgical training. This not only enhances their own understanding but develops essential teaching, leadership and communication skills.
The department maintains a robust research infrastructure, supported by a dedicated research team that enhances fellows’ scholarly development. Fellows have the opportunity to pursue advanced research training and obtain a Master’s degree in Clinical Research, to further strengthen their academic and investigative skills.
Our fellowship program offers dedicated elective time for fellows to tailor their training to individual interests and career goals. Fellows can pursue a wide range of opportunities, including global health rotations, integrative medicine, physical therapy, vulvar medicine, to name a few. This flexibility ensures a well-rounded experience that supports both clinical excellence and personal growth.
Through this comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and academically rigorous program, our graduates are exceptionally well-prepared to lead in the field of MIGS, advancing both patient care and the specialty itself.
