An integral part of the college since its inception, the Department of Psychiatry shares in the excitement and pride of the college's ongoing growth and development.

Over 100 Psychiatry faculty are spread across the valley at primary clinical teaching sites, including Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the Phoenix VA Health Care System, Valleywise Health (formerly Maricopa Integrated Health System) and Northern Arizona VA Health Care in Prescott, which supports our students enrolled in the Rural Health Professions Program. These devoted clinician educators are among the region’s most respected Psychiatrists. They are joined with a very impressive array of basic neuroscience and clinical research faculty at the internationally renowned Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, as well as our downtown Phoenix Biomedical Campus.

Education is the centerpiece of our department; our solid foundation of scholarship has boundless potential; and proactive collaboration with our medical colleagues all bode well in our efforts to advance and improve the quality and availability of mental health care in Arizona.

Our third-year Psychiatry Clerkship and fourth-year electives have been popular and valued experiences drawing many students into our specialty, as well as developing relevant clinical skills for those pursuing other careers in medicine. The longstanding Banner affiliated Psychiatry Residency Program is now sponsored by the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix, adding to its rich tradition of training accomplished clinicians, scholars and tomorrow’s leaders in Psychiatry. Our recently accredited Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship, in partnership with Phoenix Children's Hospital, has successfully recruited its first class for 2019.
