Overview

The Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) aims to advance the understanding of human disease through research, training and mentoring the next generation of physicians and scientists through excellence in medical and graduate education. 
 
Our faculty pursue interdisciplinary hypothesis driven research and novel therapeutic development in cancer, neurological disorders, as well as metabolic and cardiovascular disease. Our investigative team uses state-of-the-art structural, computational, and experimental approaches to reveal mechanisms underlying disease to improve human health. Our collegial and collaborative faculty work closely with clinical partners to facilitate the development of new diagnostics, therapies, and preventative strategies.
 
Education is central to our mission. BMS faculty provide curricular leadership across the college’s medical education program, as well as mentorship and training for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers pursuing careers in biomedical science.
