Overview
As collaborative health care leaders, we strive to improve the quality of life for women across generations.
This is accomplished through comprehensive patient care, exceptional education and innovative research.
Innovation, integration and collaboration have provided the primary drive and focus for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix.
This past year marked the unprecedented official merger of Banner Health with the University of Arizona. This innovative model brings the academic identity of the University of Arizona together with one of the largest non-profit health care delivery systems in America, Banner Health.
The Women’s Institute (PDF) at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix has transitioned to the previous Banner Health Corporate Center in order to expand services and facilitate the development of Integrated Practice Units (IPU) in women’s health. Through facilitated collaboration with specialties such as cardiovascular services, bariatrics and endocrinology, the focus shifts from silo care to coordinated multi-specialty care teams.
Playing to our strengths, the department has continued to pursue growth in academia, teaching and research. Our residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology (now named the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix) is flourishing as we continue to attract the nation’s top medical school applicants. Our Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship is underway and has recently received AAGL certification. In addition, our plan is to thoughtfully roll out additional fellowship programs in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Gynecologic Urology over the next few years, while carefully preserving the resident experience and culture that has defined our residency program for decades. Our highly structured and mentored research program is flourishing in both basic and translational investigations.
A clear strength and advantage of our UA Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is our distributive model of education. A list of affiliated faculty members can be located on each of the respective institutions’ websites. Our affiliated partners include Valleywise Health (formerly Maricopa Integrated Health System), St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Phoenix Veterans Administrative Hospital.
The breadth and depth of clinical and research experiences provided through our distributive model of education is unprecedented.
Our national symposiums on Critical Care in Obstetrics and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery have received international acclaim for innovation and integrated teaching utilizing on-line lectures, flipped classroom, and bedside simulation. In 2016, we have embraced the realms of virtual and augmented reality to compliment the learning styles of our millennial learners.
As educators and caregivers, we must strive to capably manage and understand the true essence of “disease.”
To know what you do not know is best. To pretend to know when you do not know is disease. — Lao Tsu
