Regularly scheduled, formal didactic lectures, seminars and clinical case conferences led by our experienced faculty are considered fundamental to the training experience. These typically correlate with pertinent clinical assignments.
A "core curriculum" of bio-behavioral sciences is provided in a progressive fashion through all years of training and includes in-depth study of neurosciences, mental health and psychopathology, as well as theoretical and practical aspects of various psychotherapies and contemporary pharmacologic and somatic interventions.
The core curriculum is expanded by several other educational experiences, including interdisciplinary conferences, grand rounds, journal club and elective seminars.
Supervision remains a key component of our Psychiatry Residency Program and includes several hours of individual and group experiences each week. Supervisors include the full-time faculty at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix, our affiliated clinical sites, as well as experienced psychiatrists and other mental health professionals from the community.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the excellent teaching and scheduled conferences throughout the medical center, the nearby University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix campus and the professional community. We also encourage them to interact actively with educational programs in related fields such as neurology, internal medicine, pediatrics and psychology.
