Elevated Zero Maze (EZM) is a modification of the Elevated Plus Maze, designed to reduce ambiguity in behavioral interpretation. The circular apparatus elevated about 50 cm above the ground, consists of alternating open and enclosed quadrants. This continuous design eliminates the central platform, allowing for uninterrupted exploration. Rodents' anxiety levels are inferred from the amount of time spent in open versus enclosed quadrants and the frequency of transitions between them. The EZM provides a robust assessment of anxiety-related behaviors, useful for evaluating the efficacy of anxiolytic compounds and genetic manipulations.
