The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix has served as the sponsoring institution for Banner’s residency and fellowship programs since 2015, establishing a strong academic–clinical partnership grounded in excellence.
With more than 430 residents and fellows across 50+ programs, Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix builds on over 60 years of experience training physicians and advancing medical education.
Our programs continue to demonstrate significant growth and expansion across the region. Since 2023, GME has grown from approximately 350 trainees to over 430, with projections to reach nearly 500 trainees by 2027. This growth includes the expansion of primary care, specialty, and fellowship programs, as well as the launch of new residency programs at community-based hospitals - including Banner Payson, Banner Desert, Banner Del E. Webb, and Banner Gateway Medical Centers to strengthen local physician workforce pipelines.
Impact: Strengthening Arizona’s physician workforce by training high-quality clinicians who remain in the region, improving access, continuity, and outcomes for the communities we serve.
Our programs are nationally recognized for excellence in clinical care, scholarly activity, and innovative teaching. We are committed to developing the next generation of physicians through a supportive learning environment, rigorous academic standards, and meaningful contributions to patient care and community health.
